AYN RAND, 1905–1982

Russian-born American writer and philosopher

Themes: objectivist ethics, romantic capitalism (libertarianism); Refrains: the virtues of egoism, the vices of altruism; Greatest Hits: The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged, The Virtue of Selfishness

Ayn Rand is an important original thinker who championed integrity and ability as keys to a productive and prosperous society. In her view, capitalism without exploitation (enlightened self-interest) is the best system; socialism with exploitation (unenlightened collective interest) is the worst. Rand’s fictional capitalists are all schooled in philosophy, and they are all virtuous beings.
