Ayn Rand

For the New Intellectual

Philosophy – the “love of wisdom” – a big murderess?

How could mere ideas about the composition of the world and the nature of man influence our destiny as individuals in such a strong way?

This volume contains the most essential passages of her novels, which provides the reader with a good insight into the world of “Objectivism,” the idea system of Ayn Rand.

Philosophy: Who Needs It

Those who do not have a rational philosophy are entirely on the mercy of the philosophy of other people.

And perhaps these don't mean it so well with you as you want them to.

The title essay contains Ayn Rand's famous West Point talk, in which she explains what an immense important role philosophy plays in the life of every single man – regardless of his profession or his intellectual interests.

Philosophy is not something only for philosophers. Nobody who wants to live a happy and self-determined life can do without these cognitions.

Ayn Rand explains the fascinating details of this consideration.

The Virtue of Selfishness

In our culture, it requires some courage to call selfishness a virtue.

But the title of this book isn't just meant as pure provocation. It bases on Ayn Rand’s thought-out concept of rational egoism, which she introduces in this volume.

In her essay “The Objectivist Ethics” Ayn Rand lays the metaphysical foundation for her ethics, and in “Man’s Rights” she explains the objectivist conception of the natural right to life, freedom and property.

In chapter 17 you will learn why Objectivists think that there is only one solution for xenophobia and racism: unbridled, free and pure capitalism.

Capitalism:

The Unknown Ideal

Capitalism, the unknown ideal? Indeed, even the only moral social system?

In any case this is what Rand claims in Capitalism: The Unknown ideal, and she does it convincingly.

With that, she stands diametrically opposed to the still worldwide prevailing culture of coerced altruism. Read here, what nobody dares to say loudly in a country full of envy.

And prepare yourself for a revolution of your political understanding!

Return of the Primitive:

The Anti-Industrial Revolution

Where does the environmental conservation ideology of “The Greens” come from?

Which is the common philosophical roots of the anti-western multiculturalism and the zero growth-ideology?

In the 1960s for the first time a cultural phenomenon was made out  by the media, which manifested itself in nihilism, psychedelic drugs, “Flower-Power” and the worshipping of dictators like Ho Chi Minh and Fidel Castro. How did the life negating anti-industrialism came into modern society?

The influence of the (at that time) “New Left” is still ubiquitous... and its consequences disastrous:

The Romantic Manifesto

In this collection of essays, Ayn Rand is explicating the aesthetics of “romantic realism” on which her novels are based on, and which casts its spell over so many of her readers.

Anyway, it’s not all about the philosophy of literature, Rand rather gets to the root of the function of art itself.

Why do different people react toward one and the same work of art in such different ways? The answer lies in the individual psycho-epistemology, in the sense of life of the observer.

Good taste is objective. Check with this book whether your sense of beauty is rational!

The Esthetic Vacuum of Our Age

Romanticism is traditionally associated with an illusory flight from reality and its requirements.

But devoting himself to unrealistic dreams and shallow diversions is not an essential characteristic of romanticism. Ayn Rand discusses besides this topic the meaning of concept-formation in art and the role of the plot in the plays of ancient Greece.

The Voice of Reason

The Voice of Reason is the final collection of Ayn Rand's essays and comments on the topic of philosophy and culture.

This volume contains her almost clairvoyant thoughts about the “global balkanisation,” the increasing tribalism in modern societies and the important distinction of the natural (the “metaphysically given”) and the man made.

The essay of Peter Schwartz that can be looked up here, “Libertarianism: The Perversion of Liberty,” has given cause to the intense controversies between objectivist minarchists and libertarian anarcho-capitalists, that last to this very day.

Apollo and Dionysus

In a conflict between the two, who should keep the last word? The reality oriented faculty of objective reason or the emotional reactions of the body?

1969 was a year in which the effect of both principles was impressively demonstrated. Both by humans who wallowed in mud with their eyes rolling in ecstasy, and by those who made the glorious victory of high-tech over the deadly powers of nature possible Apollo 11 in space and Dionysus in Woodstock. A comparison study.

Ayn Rand

The Art of Fiction

How does one become a good author of novels?

1958, after the completion of Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand gave on the demand of prospective authors in a private setting twelve four-hour lectures on the art and technique of writing good literature.

The Art of Fiction is based on these lectures, which originally were recorded on tape, transcribed, and edited for the present publication.

Rand deals with the four main elements of writing, topic, plot, characterisation, and style, in her, as usually, entertaining but crystal-clear manner. She furthermore differentiates the form of “romantic realism,” that is preferred by her, and naturalism in contemporary literature. While the former takes into account the freedom of will, the latter celebrates a fatalistic standpoint on life, which robs man of every hope on the improvement of his position, and becomes, in the end, a self-fulfilling prophecy.

In her analyses Thomas Wolfe, Gertrude Stein, Sinclair Lewis and James Joyce, among others, serve as negative examples.

Victor Hugo, the criminal author Mickey Spillane, and Dostojewski are serving her as examples of good writing.

Because both spoken and written language are an expression of thinking, in the treatment of such topics there is a fluent transition into epistemology. A good writing style is, in ones native language, the result of a good and precise thinking style, which one can train with the corresponding habits.

Ayn Rand provides us for this purpose the corresponding instructions in The Art of Fiction and in The Art of Nonfiction.

The Romantic Manifesto can be recommended as an addition to this book.

Ayn Rand

The Art of Nonfiction

“If you are not Aristotelian all the way down, it is no moral crime; but it will cause problems, so train yourself to be one.”

In 1969 Ayn Rand held with an intimate circle of friends and authors a series of 16 lectures on the topic of “nonfiction” who wanted to publish articles in her magazine The Objectivist.

This book is recommendable for all those who are dealing with theoretical treatises or journalistic reports on a regular basis. Ayn Rand treats the role of the conscious and the unconscious mind in the writing process just as she does with the nature of psychological writing blocks and how one overcomes them.

(Rand identifies many difficulties in writing as ones of a lack of technique and self-discipline. She describes, for example, with which determination she fully avoided her social obligations during her work on Atlas Shrugged in order to be able to concentrate fully on her work and this for the period of 13 years.

Even more as The Art of Fiction, the book on hand is basically a work on good epistemology. Clarity, selectivity, organization and style are clearly products of thinking, so non-authors can too profit from the de-mystification of professional writing in this book.

“Any person who can speak English grammatically can learn to write nonfiction. All you need is what you need for life in general: an orderly method of thinking.”

Leonard Peikoff

The Ominous Parallels

Is fascism in America on the advance?

Written during the lifetime and under supervision of Ayn Rand, Dr. Peikoff shows the worrying parallels between the policies of Nazi Germany and the ones of the United States of America.

With shattering descriptions of the daily routine in a concentration camp and analyses of the philosophical essence of national socialism, the Ominous Parallels represent currently the only work on the objectivist philosophy of history.

With the help of Peikoff’s criteria, one can without difficulty, make out the parallels in this country also.

Explosive material!
